It is a story of the time of Satyug. In a city named Mahishmati, there was a mighty king named Indrasen. He ruled his subjects righteously. He was blessed with sons, grandsons and wealth and was also a great devotee of Lord Hari.
Once a Maharishi came to the court of the king through the sky. The king immediately stood before the Maharishi with folded hands and offered him a seat and water. Then the king asked the Maharishi the reason for his visit. Then the Maharishi said, you will be surprised by what I am going to say.
Once I went to Yamlok. There I praised Yamraj for being righteous and Dharmaraj. At the same time, I saw your father, a great scholar and a pious man, in Yamraj’s court because he had broken the Ekadashi fast. He asked me to give you this message that he is with Yamraj because of some problem in his previous life. He asked me to observe Ashwin Krishna Indira Ekadashi fast on his behalf so that he can attain heaven.
After listening to Naradji, the king asked him the method of fasting and observed the fast of Indira Ekadashi of Ashwin Krishna Paksha as per the rules. When the king observed the fast along with his relatives and servants, flowers rained from the sky and the king’s father rode on Garuda and reached Vishnulok from Yamlok. Later, due to the effect of Ekadashi fast, King Indrasen also attained heaven after death.
Lord Krishna says- O Yudhishthira! The importance of Indira Ekadashi fast that I have told you, just by reading or listening to it, the sins of man are destroyed and he enjoys all the pleasures of the world and attains Vaikuntha.
